About

Moritz Schmal, osteopath in Coffs Harbour

I'm Moritz Schmal, a German-trained osteopath — Master of Science at the Osteopathie Schule Deutschland and Dresden International University — with a background in physiotherapy.

How I practice is simple to state. I want to find what's actually driving your problem, treat it with my hands, and give you the understanding and tools so you need me less over time, not more.

What I treat

Osteopathy is used to address a broad range of musculoskeletal complaints — back and neck pain, headaches, jaw and TMJ disorders, shoulder and hip pain, sports and overuse injuries, and persistent pain that has not resolved with time.

If you are unsure whether your concern is one osteopathy can address, feel free to reach out.

The first appointment

Your first appointment runs an hour. We start with your history and what's brought you in, then I examine how you move and treat hands-on, explaining what I'm finding as we go. You leave with a clear picture of the problem and a plan to address it. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in; no referral needed.

What osteopathy is

Osteopathy is a form of hands-on healthcare based on the relationship between the structure of the body and the way it functions. Rather than treating the painful area in isolation, an osteopath assesses the body as a whole — its joints, muscles, nerves and connective tissue — and considers how a problem in one region may contribute to another. Treatment is manual: the mobilisation, stretching and release of muscles and joints, supported by advice on movement and load.

How I work

The result of the assessment directs how I work and which techniques I use. No two patients are alike, so each needs a different approach — structural, fascial, or gentler hands-on work, depending on what the situation calls for.

I regard osteopathy as a partnership between practitioner and patient. Together we work towards the goal the patient sets at the first assessment, and while the approach may shift from session to session, that goal stays in view. My aim is that patients come to need me less over time, not more.
